Tax file numbers and your super
Giving First Super your tax file number (TFN) is not compulsory. But if we don’t have it, you could pay more tax than you need to, and there are some contributions we can’t accept.
Your TFN also helps us find other super accounts in your name, making it easier to bring your super together.
What happens if we don’t have your TFN?
- your employer and salary sacrifice contributions may be taxed at a higher rate
- we can’t accept personal after-tax contributions from you
- we can’t receive a government co-contribution for you if you’re eligible
- you may pay more tax on some super benefit payments
- it may be harder to find other super accounts in your name
How to provide your TFN?
The easiest way is through firstonline.
Log in, go to My Details and select Edit. If we don’t already have your TFN, you can add it there.
You can also complete our Tax File Number Notification form and return it to us.
How we use your TFN
First Super is authorised under superannuation law to collect your TFN and can only use it for lawful purposes.
Your TFN may be provided to another super fund when your benefits are transferred, unless you ask us in writing not to provide it.
Providing your TFN is voluntary. It is not an offence if you choose not to provide it.
