KiwiSaver transfer process

We’ve helped thousands of people successfully transfer their KiwiSaver over to Australia.

We’re here to answer all your KiwiSaver transfer questions and we’ll help you through every step of the process. Transfer your KiwiSaver today in just four steps.

Things to be aware of before you transfer

  • You must transfer your whole balance. The maximum amount you can transfer is up to AUD $120,000 this financial year 2025-26. If you have more than this, you may transfer up to AUD $360,000 in one move under the Bring Forward rule if you meet eligibility.
  • Once in Australia, the KiwiSaver component in your super account can only be moved between other Australian APRA regulated KiwiSaver accepting funds or back to a KiwiSaver scheme in New Zealand.
  • Most super funds do not accept KiwiSaver transfers. You’re not able transfer your KiwiSaver to an SMSF as these are regulated by the ATO and not APRA.

How to transfer your KiwiSaver to First Super

Step 1

Simply join First Super online (takes 5 minutes).

Make note of your member number.

Step 2

Download your KiwiSaver Acceptance Letter (KSAL).

This letter confirms to your KiwiSaver scheme that First Super is a KiwiSaver accepting fund and we can accept your KiwiSaver transfer to Australia.

You will need your First Super Member number to access your KiwiSaver Acceptance Letter.

Step 3

Contact your KiwiSaver scheme and:

  • request Trans-Tasman Portability forms (note the form may be called something else)
  • complete and sign the forms

Step 4

Send or email the Trans-Tasman Portability form along with the KSAL to your KiwiSaver scheme.

That’s it. We recommend you follow up with your KiwiSaver scheme to confirm they have all the correct information they need to process your KiwiSaver transfer.

Confirmation

Your KiwiSaver scheme will notify you when they have processed and transferred your KiwiSaver to First Super.

It takes a few days before you can see your KiwiSaver transfer in your account. We’ll send you confirmation once your KiwiSaver is in your actual account.

The whole transfer process takes approximately 2–6 weeks.

KiwiSaver Trans-Tasman Portability forms

It’s important to note that your KiwiSaver fund may call this form something else, such as a Permanent Emigration Transfer Request form.

Usually, the form requires you add some or all of the following information:

  • Provider name: First Super
  • Postal address: First Super, PO BOX 666, Carlton South, VIC 3053
  • Email: mail@firstsuper.com.au
  • Phone: 1300 360 988 / +613 8663 2110
  • ABN: 56 286 625 181
  • SPIN & USI: FIS0001AU
  • Your First Super account number
  • Your First Super member number
  • First Super’s bank details can be found on the KSAL.

Remember to send all completed forms, supporting documentation and KSAL to your KiwiSaver scheme.

Common causes of KiwiSaver Transfer delays

Sometimes, it can take longer than expected to transfer your KiwiSaver funds to Australia.

These delays are often outside our or your KiwiSaver scheme provider’s control. So, it’s hard to know if they’ll affect your transfer.

  • Inland Revenue Processing
In New Zealand, all KiwiSaver transfers to Australia must go through Inland Revenue. This helps ensure that you only have one KiwiSaver account at a time. The Inland Revenue’s processing times can vary, which might slow down the transfer of your funds to us.
  • Intermediary Bank Processing
If your KiwiSaver provider isn’t a bank, they may need to use an intermediary bank to send your funds to Australia. This can take extra time, especially if there’s missing information in the transfer file. This might make it harder for us to match the funds to your account right away.
  • Helpful Communication
By sending us information from your KiwiSaver provider, this can help speed up the process. It can help us match the transferred funds with your documentation quicker. Once we have this, we can transfer the funds into your First Super account.

We work closely with the KiwiSaver scheme providers to resolve these issues. And together, we look for ways to improve the transfer process between the two countries.

We’re here to help. So get in touch.
