Frontier market update – September 2023

Dr. Shahana Kalyan Mukherjee (Capital markets and asset allocation) gives the September Market Update, explaining how the focus continues to be on central bank decisions.

Most central banks have continued to increase interest rates or maintained a tightening monetary policy stance, however the RBA left the cash rate unchanged at 4.1% at its September meeting, the third straight month where the policy rate was left unchanged. The difference between these decisions is due to central banks remaining conscious of the extent to which tightening is delivered.

Dr. Mukherjee also discusses the state of the Australian Dollar, the resilience of the U.S economy, and the weakness in China’s economic recovery.
