In the August market update, Dr Vivian Xu, Quantitative Research Consultant from the Frontier Capital Markets team talks about the market selloff at the start of August and the recovery.
She discusses how Japan experienced the most extreme swing, and the volatility in global markets. But after the initial volatility, she says, it corrected quite fast – by the end of August, in some cases it bounced back to where it was before the sell-off.
She explains that the catalysts that triggered this downturn can be hard to untangle – but one of the key contributors was the Bank of Japan hiking its interest rates twice in recent months, which was a significant deviation from Japan’s long-term policy stance.
Outside Japan, contributing factors included the release of disappointing U.S economic data and weaker Technology earnings data.
With Tom Lambert, Consultant on the Capital Markets team.
