How much insurance do I need?

You probably insure your home, your car, your possessions and your health. It’s not nice to think about, but what would happen if you lost your ability to earn an income?

First Super offers insurance cover for Death, Total & Permanent Disablement and Income Protection. You can find more details about cover and costs in our Insurance booklet.

You need to decide if the ‘default’ level of minimum insurance cover you automatically receive when you join is the right level of cover for you.

This will depend on your personal situation. If you are the main breadwinner, have a partner, children, a mortgage and/or other debts, you’re likely to need more cover than someone who is single and has little debt.

Start with your living costs. If you couldn’t work for six months, how much money would you need to pay the bills and cover living expenses?

How much would you need if you could never work again?

Once you have these figures, you can work out how many units of insurance you require. And if you’re unsure, our Financial Planner^ can help you work it out. Or use MoneySmart Insurance Calculator to estimate the cover you may need.
